This trail climbs steeply from the Tanbark Ridge tunnel to a historic site along the Mountains to Sea Trail. Excellent displays of mountain laurel blooms can be found in mid to late June.

Bridgett Aguirre said: this is a wonderful short workout if you make a loop. At the end where you intersect MTS, take the west bound, a right on MTS to another trail that leads back to the Tanbark tunnel parking area. There are old fireplace remains at this trail where you turn to the left.
Bob Singleton said: An easier, more pleasant route is to start from the trailhead on the east side of Ox Creek Road. This is about 0.6 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway MP 376.6. There is only room for 2-3 cars to park here and the trail to the lodge is a little longer (about 1.3 miles).
Steven Rearden said: It was very steep at first from the tanbark tunnel up to rattlesnake lodge. Then when we got to Rattlesnake lodge, we found out there was some other ways to get there. I would advise you to not go to rattlesnake lodge from the Tanbark tunnel.
